CNMI prepares for 250th US Independence Day commemoration

GOVERNOR Arnold I. Palacios has issued Executive Order 2024-007, establishing the CNMI America250 Commission that will plan and implement the local activities leading up to the commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the nation’s Declaration of Independence on July 4, 2026.

In 2016, the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission was established to plan and orchestrate the 250th anniversary of America’s founding.

According to the governor’s E.O. 2024-007, the CNMI America250 Commission will have 11 members representing a diverse range of stakeholders, including representatives from the Legislature, government agencies, community organizations, cultural institutions and private sector entities.

The governor will designate a chair and vice chair from among the commission members, who will serve without compensation, and will be responsible for their own expenses related to the activities, which the CNMI government can fund, subject to the availability of funds.

Last week, the governor appointed Senate President Edith Deleon Guerrero to the commission.

The commission will have the following responsibilities:

1. Develop and implement a comprehensive plan for organizing and coordinating events, activities and initiatives to celebrate the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence in the CNMI.

2. Foster collaboration among government agencies, community organizations, cultural institutions, private sector entities, and other stakeholders to ensure a unified and successful commemoration.

3. Promote public engagement and participation by organizing educational programs, exhibitions, cultural performances, parades, festivals, conferences, and other related events.

4. Develop partnership with relevant federal agencies, state and local governments, and national America250 organizations to leverage resources, expertise, and funding opportunities.

5. Establish subcommittees or working groups as necessary to focus on specific areas such as fundraising, marketing, logistics, and community outreach.

6. Advise the governor and provide regular progress reports on the commission’s activities, plans and budgetary needs.
